Lawn mowing
Traditional
Traditional lawn mowing is as you know it. We mow your entire lawn regularly. We mow it down to the desired height during the season and at the end of the season we make it grow up to a height where it can withstand the winter. If you wish, we can also regularly provide what the lawn lacks in terms of watering, lime, basic fertilizer and reseeding.
Differentiated
Differentiated mowing, also called mosaic mowing, involves dividing an area into fields that are mowed at different times of the year, so that some of the grass is tall when others are mowed.
This will ensure that insects in the treated fields survive the mowing and that flowering herbs are always present for them.
By reducing mowing in selected areas, we give wild herbs the opportunity to bloom and thus be an important food source for bees, butterflies and other insects. Removing nutrients from the soil promotes biodiversity. Which is what we do when we mow the grass and remove the clippings.
Denmark’s municipalities have increasingly begun to differentiate grasslands, depending on what the individual areas are used for. In some places, grasslands are tended as traditional, i.e. trimmed nature. In other places, nature is given free rein, with all that this entails of tall grass, wild flowers and wildlife.
Where the grass is allowed to grow, and where it is still frequently mowed, depends on the individual area. On larger areas where the area is not used for anything specific, paths are cut so that people can still walk there.
However, nature cannot be allowed to develop freely in the flowerbed right next to the road, as there must be good overview conditions, and the road must be able to be drained, snow must be swept away, etc.
If you ask us to do differentiated lawn mowing, we will start by proposing a plan for how it is best for the biodiversity in your garden.
Typically, we will suggest a routine where we mow the entire lawn at the beginning of the season. During the season it is mowed twice, 1.5 months apart – each time we mow half of the grass. Another option is to continuously move the paths used to get around the garden. And finally we end the season by mowing everything – although we always make sure to leave overwintering opportunities. This can be at the bottom of the hedge, in bushes, etc.
The specific plan for differentiated mowing depends on your garden and what is most natural to do. It is always you who decides how, we simply give you a palette of options to choose from.
So the first thing we start with is always to agree on a plan for your differentiated lawn mowing. A plan for when to mow which areas. What is best depends entirely on the shape and size of the garden.
Many people experience challenges with tall grass. If you let nature unfold freely and have the right conditions, your garden will quickly become a small jungle! Grass can easily reach more than 1 meter in height!

The first time the lawn should be mowed is when the soil temperature is 6-8 degrees, which is usually at the beginning of April. Here the grass has started to grow, and we can use the lawn mower. Depending on the rain, the grass should be mowed fairly regularly – every week – which gives a dense lawn. The last time is when the temperature drops below 6-8 degrees. This typically happens around October.
For the wild free garden, the grass is mowed completely differently. When you order lawn mowing from us, you are free to decide how we should mow the grass – traditional or differentiated mowing that promotes biodiversity in your garden!
