LAWN
Topdressing

To level your lawn, you need white sand, also known as beach sand. Spread the sand fairly evenly with a shovel. Here it is important to invest in an asphalt rake. With the asphalt rake, you can push the sand back and forth so that the fine sand is distributed into depressions and unevenness.

If some areas of your lawn are exceptionally deep, you can lift the turf off, add soil or sand and then put the turf back on. Use a spade to split the turf and lift it off. The same method can be used if you have a raised area in your lawn.

Here you dig out the turf, remove some of the soil and put the turf back on. This type of levelling should be done when there is good grass growth.

Deep tracks left by, for example, a car can be levelled using a lever. The procedure is that you stick the lever into the ground on both sides of the track and lift/tilt the turf up to level. When everything is tilted in place, fill the track with fine sand.

If there is a difference in level between your lawn and your tiles, you can cut the turf off the lawn. Lay the turf like a puzzle on the lawn so that you can put it in place later. Once the turf has been removed, you can easily dig the soil away so that the level matches the height when the turf is laid again.

You can also use top dressing, which mainly consists of hill sand or washed beach sand. In addition to leveling, top dressing also improves soil quality if you have very clayey soil. The sand from top dressing helps to improve soil conditions so that the lawn drains better.

The first step in the process is to mow your lawn. Set the height to around 5 cm. If the machine has a collector, feel free to use it. It is a good idea to rake the grass afterwards. Both to remove any remains of cut grass, but also to remove leaves or branches so that top dressing can get down to the top layer of the grass as easily as possible.

It is also a good idea to re-seed grass. This will help the lawn to become extra dense and green. At a minimum, you should sow grass seed in places where the grass is less dense.

Spread the top dressing with a shovel. Once you have spread the sand with the shovel, you should then level it all out, for example with the back of a rake or an asphalt rake.

Gardening offer

Traditionally, white sand, also known as beach sand, has been used to top dress the lawn – which simply means leveling the lawn so that it is completely flat.

The sand is spread fairly evenly with a shovel. Here it is important to invest in an asphalt rake. With the asphalt rake, you can push the sand back and forth so that the fine sand is distributed into depressions and unevenness. If it is only a matter of smaller areas, the back of a regular garden rake can also be used.

If the lawn is very uneven or has deep holes, you may want to consider applying top dressing in several passes. If you apply too much gravel or sand at once, you risk suffocating the grass.

If we are going to help with top dressing, we will first calculate how much sand needs to be used. We will have our haulier deliver this to your address. We will then arrive and do the top dressing. We will bring electric wheelbarrows, as a lot of sand usually has to be dragged and transported.

After we have top dressed your lawn, a small re-sowing of grass seed is usually done. This is especially true in areas that are a bit muddy or where an extra thick layer of sand has been added.

We will clean up nicely and you can use your lawn freely afterwards. Just be careful with the load from, for example, ball games for the first 3-4 weeks.
